“The butterfly is the ultimate symbol of a person’s grief journey,” ~Sheila Munafo-Kanoza
Why Butterflies & Companions on a Journey
Our lives are marked and measured by when significant people enter and exit them. Birthdays, Anniversaries, and Funerals become more than just dates – they are defining moments. We mark them, we celebrate them, and we remember them.
The butterfly has been the symbol of Hillandale’s family-style care for more than 50 years. We understand how special these creatures truly are. That’s why it was our pleasure recently to partner with Companions on a Journey and host a Butterfly Release for families who are grieving the loss of loved ones.
Sheila Munafo-Kanoza, founder and executive director of Companions on a Journey, explains it this way, “Caterpillars hide within a cocoon, gaining a soul, hope and strength until it is ready to bring new beauty to the world. That’s how we are in the grief journey as we heal and then prepare ourselves, at our own pace, to leave our cocoons and fly.”
Bears & Companions on a Journey
Hillandale Communities enjoys an ongoing partnership with Companions on a Journey whereby Chesterwood Village residents make soft, cuddly bears for grieving children. We also host free monthly Companions on a Journey meetings for families coping with the loss of a loved one.
Our association with Sheila and her organization has been a blessing to so many people both within our communities and beyond. We believe that we possess a unique perspective on the subject of family, because Hillandale Communities are family-owned and operated. That’s why we are pleased to open our doors and offer hope to anyone in this season of life.
